The 50th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention and the World Wetlands Day was celebrated by the Department of Environment (DoE)
The acting interim project manager of Conservation of Iranian Wetlands Project announced the commemoration of 50th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention and World Wetlands Day with the theme “Inseparable water, wetlands and life" was held at the Department of Environment’s conference hall.
This conference was held, online and offline, in presence of the Vice President, the Head of the Department of Environment, Ambassador of Syria, representatives of Russia, India, Oman and Afghanistan, the UNDP Resident Representative in Iran and other national and international authorities. In this ceremony Mr Jahangiri, the Vice president, Mr Kalantari, the Vice president and head of DoE, Mr Providas, UNDP Resident Representative and Mr Lahijanzade, Deputy of Marine Environment and Wetlands and National Project Director of CIWP delivered speeches. They emphasized on the importance of wetland ecosystems and also presented the key policies and management measures of the government for wetlands conservation. The Minister of Foreign Affaris, Mr Zarif and the Ramsar Secretary General, Martha Rojas Urrego also delivered their messages to the audience of this event through video messages.
Mehri Asnaashari added: “This ceremony is annually held on February 2nd, coinciding with the World Wetland Day and is taken from the date of Wetlands Convention ratification in Ramsar in 1971”. This occasion, is celebrated in different wetland sites in Iran by local activists and stakeholders with various programs including exhibitions, competitions, etc. She also said about the "Wetland Champions" and selected wetland guards who were introduced and awarded in this ceremony.
